"I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance."
-- William Faulkner

Nobel Prize acceptance speech, December, 1950

A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe… He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us … Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
-- Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

We are a group of researchers working in business schools who strive to create a new vision of organizations as sites for the development and expression of compassion. We are part of a broader community of scholars who are dedicated to developing a perspective on organizations as sites for human growth and the development of human strengths.

Cases

Bek, J., et al. (2007). A foundation of giving: How one company cares for its employees. This case documents the inception, evolution, triumphs and tribulations of the Borders Group Foundation. The Foundation offers emergency monetary grants for crisis situations such as illnesses, financial hardships, and natural disasters, as well as educational scholarships, a bereavement response initiative, and several other programs to support employees. The case was designed to enrich understandings, and stimulate debate and discussion, about vision implementation and internal corporate social responsibility.

Dutton, J. E., Quinn, R., & Pasick, R. (2001). The Heart of Reuters, Parts A & B. This case describes the responses of Reuters America to the incidents of 9/11/2001. Part A describes the range of adaptive responses to the events of 9/11, and invites the question, What is it about the culture, structure, and strategy of Reuters that explains their response pattern? Part B describes the range of the impact of Reuters' responses to 9/11 on employees. The Heart of Reuters is ideal for a discussion of leadership and change, crisis management, resilience, and compassion. This case also has an accompanying video of Phil Lynch, President of Reuters, America for just two weeks when the 9/11 attacks occurred. The video has Phil Lynch discussing his role as a leader, the compassion of Reuters and the effects of their responses on the organization.
